Robert Cooper (or Cowper, Coupar, etc.) was a lay clerk at King's College, Cambridge in 1493-5, obtaining the degrees of MusB and MusD from the university in 1493 and 1507 respectively. He may be the Robert Cowper who was master of the household chapel choir of Margaret, Countess of Richmond and Derby, c.1503-9. Thomas Whythorne described him as "of the Abbey at St Edmondz bury". On 25 Sep 1539 he was presented by William Whytbroke and the other minor canons of St Paul's for election to their number, but was not chosen.

Cooper was ordained a priest in 1498 and held several rectorships: Snodhill, Herefordshire (vacated by 1514); Lydiard Tregoz, Glos (1499-1513); Snargate, Kent (1526-1539/40). He was also granted two benefices from the Archbishop of Canterbury.
