<poem>
I love the Lord, because the voice
I love the Lord, because the voice
Of my pray'r heard hath he;
Of my pray’r heard hath he;
I'll ever call on him, because
I’ll ever call on him, because
He bowed his ear to me.
He bowed his ear to me.

E'en when the snares of cruel death
E’en when the snares of cruel death
About beset me round,
About beset me round,
When pains of hell me caught, and when
When pains of hell me caught, and when
Line 91: Line 115:
All those that simple be;
All those that simple be;
I was in woeful misery,
I was in woeful misery,
And he deliver'd me.
And he deliver’d me.

And now, my soul, since thou art safe
And now, my soul, since thou art safe
Line 117: Line 141:
I thankfully will take,
I thankfully will take,
And on the name of God will call,
And on the name of God will call,
When I my pray'rs do make.
When I my pray’rs do make.

I to the Lord will pay my vows
I to the Lord will pay my vows
With joy and great delight,
With joy and great delight,
Now at this very present time
Now at this very present time
In all his people's sight.
In all his people’s sight.

Right dear and precious in his sight
Right dear and precious in his sight
Line 134: Line 158:
The bonds of my distress.
The bonds of my distress.

Therefore I'll offer up to thee
Therefore I’ll offer up to thee
A sacrifice of praise;
A sacrifice of praise;
And I will call upon the name
And I will call upon the name
Line 142: Line 166:
With joy and great delight,
With joy and great delight,
Now at this very present time
Now at this very present time
In all his people's sight:
In all his people’s sight:

Yea, in the courts of God's own house,
Yea, in the courts of God’s own house,
And in the midst of thee,
And in the midst of thee,
O thou Jerusalem: therefore
O thou Jerusalem: therefore
The Lord our God praise ye.
The Lord our God praise ye.}}

My soul with grateful thoughts of love
My soul with grateful thoughts of love
Entirely is possess'd,
Entirely is possess’d,
Because the Lord vouchsaf'd to hear
Because the Lord vouchsaf’d to hear
The voice of my request.
The voice of my request.

Since he has now his ear inclin'd,
Since he has now his ear inclin’d,
I never will despair;
I never will despair;
But still in all the straits of life
But still in all the straits of life
To him address my pray'r.
To him address my pray’r.

With deadly sorrows compass'd round,
With deadly sorrows compass’d round,
With pains of hell oppress'd,
With pains of hell oppress’d,
When troubles seiz'd my aching heart,
When troubles seiz’d my aching heart,
And anguish rack'd my breast;
And anguish rack’d my breast;

On God's Almighty name I call'd,
On God’s Almighty name I call’d,
And thus to him I pray'd:
And thus to him I pray’d:
Lord, I beseech thee, save my soul,
Lord, I beseech thee, save my soul,
With sorrows quite dismay'd.
With sorrows quite dismay’d.

How just and merciful is God!
How just and merciful is God!
Line 181: Line 203:
Resume thy wonted rest;
Resume thy wonted rest;
For God has wondrously to thee
For God has wondrously to thee
His bounteous love express'd.
His bounteous love express’d.

When death alarm'd me, he remov'd
When death alarm’d me, he remov’d
My dangers and my fears:
My dangers and my fears:
My feet from falling he secur'd,
My feet from falling he secur’d,
And dried my eyes from tears.
And dried my eyes from tears.

Therefore my life's remaining years,
Therefore my life’s remaining years,
Which God to me shall lend,
Which God to me shall lend,
Will I in praises to his name,
Will I in praises to his name,
Line 200: Line 222:
Then what return to him shall I
Then what return to him shall I
For all his goodness make?
For all his goodness make?
I'll praise his name, and with glad zeal
I’ll praise his name, and with glad zeal
The cup of blessing take.
The cup of blessing take.

I'll pay my vows amongst his saints,
I’ll pay my vows amongst his saints,
Whose blood (howe'er despis'd
Whose blood (howe’er despis’d
By wicked men) in God's account
By wicked men) in God’s account
Is always highly priz'd.
Is always highly priz’d.

By various ties, O Lord, must I
By various ties, O Lord, must I
To thy dominion bow;
To thy dominion bow;
Thy humble handmaid's son before,
Thy humble handmaid’s son before,
Thy ransom'd captive now.
Thy ransom’d captive now.

To thee I'll off'rings bring of praise;
To thee I’ll off’rings bring of praise;
And, whilst I bless thy name,
And, whilst I bless thy name,
The just performance of my vows
The just performance of my vows
Line 221: Line 243:
And in thy house shall join,
And in thy house shall join,
To bless thy name with one consent,
To bless thy name with one consent,
And mix their songs with mine.
And mix their songs with mine.}}

===Metrical paraphrases by [[Isaac Watts]]===
{{Text|English|
:PART 1 (C. M.)
:''Recovery from sickness''
I love the Lord; he heard my cries,
And pitied every groan;
Long as I live, when troubles rise,
I’ll hasten to his throne.

I love the Lord; he bowed his ear,
And chased my griefs away;
O let my heart no more despair,
While I have breath to pray!

My flesh declined, my spirits fell,
And I drew near the dead;
While inward pangs and fears of hell
Perplexed my wakeful head.

"My God," I cried, "thy servant save,
"Thou ever good and just;
Thy power can rescue from the grave,
Thy power is all my trust."

The Lord beheld me sore distressed,
He bid my pains remove
Return, my soul, to God thy rest,
For thou hast known his love.

My God hath saved my soul from death,
And dried my falling tears;
Now to his praise I’ll spend my breath,
And my remaining years.

:PART 2 (C. M.)
:''Vows made in trouble paid in the church''
What shall I render to my God
For all his kindness shown?
My feet shall visit thine abode,
My songs address thy throne.

Among the saints that fill thine house
My off’rings shall be paid;
There shall my zeal perform the vows
My soul in anguish made.

How much is mercy thy delight,
Thou ever-blessed God!
How dear thy servants in thy sight!
How precious is their blood!

How happy all thy servants are!
How great thy grace to me!
My life, which thou hast made thy care,
Lord, I devote to thee.

Now I am thine, for ever thine,
Nor shall my purpose move
Thy hand hath loosed my bonds of pain,
And bound me with thy love.

Here in thy courts I leave my vow,
And thy rich grace record;
Witness, ye saints, who hear me now,
If I forsake the Lord.}}

<poem>
How glows with grateful love my breast!
How glows with grateful love my breast!
For God the voice of my request
For God the voice of my request
Accepts, and, while my hands I rear,
Accepts, and, while my hands I rear,
Bows to my plaint the willing ear:
Bows to my plaint the willing ear:
For this, to life's extremest hour,
For this, to life’s extremest hour,
My lips to him the pray'r shall pour.
My lips to him the pray’r shall pour.

While death its snares around me threw,
While death its snares around me threw,
The grave, its horrors to my view
The grave, its horrors to my view
Presenting, press'd with heaviest grief,
Presenting, press’d with heaviest grief,
From thee, great God, I sought relief:
From thee, great God, I sought relief:
'O save me, heav'nly Sire, I cried,
‘O save me, heav’nly Sire, I cried,
And turn th'impending stroke aside.'
And turn th’impending stroke aside.

Great is our God, beyond all bound
Great is our God, beyond all bound
His providence and pow'r are found;
His providence and pow’r are found;
Just, good, and kind, is Israel's Lord,
Just, good, and kind, is Israel’s Lord,
His breast with tend'rest pity stor'd,
His breast with tend’rest pity stor’d,
And prompt his arm, when ills invade,
And prompt his arm, when ills invade,
The guileless and the meek to aid.
The guileless and the meek to aid.

His mercies, 'midst thy deepest woe,
His mercies, ’midst thy deepest woe,
By blest experience taught to know,
By blest experience taught to know,
Turn, turn thee to thy rest, my soul;
Turn, turn thee to thy rest, my soul;
For he who sits above the pole
For he who sits above the pole
(Tremendous name) has o'er thy head
(Tremendous name) has o’er thy head
The fulness of his bounty shed.
The fulness of his bounty shed.

Line 260: Line 347:
From tears, to guard from lapse my feet,
From tears, to guard from lapse my feet,
And bid me in this earthly seat
And bid me in this earthly seat
(Life's wide dominion) still reside,
(Life’s wide dominion) still reside,
To thee in filial fear allied.
To thee in filial fear allied.

To God my heart resign'd its care;
To God my heart resign’d its care;
To him my tongue address'd its pray'r:
To him my tongue address’d its pray’r:
While, struck with terrors as I stood,
While, struck with terrors as I stood,
A sea of sorrows round me flow'd,
A sea of sorrows round me flow’d,
'No more, my soul, no more,' I cried,
‘No more, my soul, no more,I cried,
'In Man's fallacious aid confide.'
‘In Man’s fallacious aid confide.

O, what requital at my hand
O, what requital at my hand
Shall mercies, Lord, like thine, demand?
Shall mercies, Lord, like thine, demand?
By thee from each distress enlarg'd,
By thee from each distress enlarg’d,
The cup with benediction charg'd
The cup with benediction charg’d
I take, and, touch'd with holy flame,
I take, and, touch’d with holy flame,
Invoke my great Deliv'rer's name.
Invoke my great Deliv’rer’s name.

Ev'n now, before th'assembled train,

Ev'n now, within thy sacred fane,

Behold me at thine altar bow,
Behold me at thine altar bow,
And, pleas'd, absolve my offer'd vow.

Who thy decrees, great God, obey,
Who thy decrees, great God, obey,
Secure on thee their hope shall slay;
Secure on thee their hope shall slay;
Nor fraud nor rapine's iron hand
Nor fraud nor rapine’s iron hand
Shall dare to touch the pious band,
Shall dare to touch the pious band,
For sacred is their blood, and high
For sacred is their blood, and high
Line 293: Line 380:
In me thy servant, Lord, in me
In me thy servant, Lord, in me
The offspring of thy handmaid see,
The offspring of thy handmaid see,
Releas'd by thee, from day to day
Releas’d by thee, from day to day

Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 114 & 115)

Latin.png Latin text

114:1  Alleluja. Dilexi, quoniam exaudiet Dominus vocem orationis meae.
114:2  Quia inclinavit aurem suam mihi, et in diebus meis invocabo.
114:3  Circumdederunt me dolores mortis; et pericula inferni invenerunt me.
  Tribulationem et dolorem inveni,
114:4  et nomen Domini invocavi: o Domine, libera animam meam.
114:5  Misericors Dominus et justus, et Deus noster miseretur.
114:6  Custodiens parvulos Dominus; humiliatus sum, et liberavit me.
114:7  Convertere, anima mea, in requiem tuam, quia Dominus benefecit tibi:
114:8  quia eripuit animam meam de morte, oculos meos a lacrimis, pedes meos a lapsu.
114:9  Placebo Domino in regione vivorum.

115:1  Alleluja.
115:2  Ego dixi in excessu meo: Omnis homo mendax.
115:5  Vota mea Domino reddam coram omni populo ejus.
115:6  Pretiosa in conspectu Domini mors sanctorum ejus.
115:7  O Domine, quia ego servus tuus; ego servus tuus, et filius ancillae tuae.
Disrupisti vincula mea:
115:8  tibi sacrificabo hostiam laudis, et nomen Domini invocabo.
115:9  Vota mea Domino reddam in conspectu omnis populi ejus;
115:10  in atriis domus Domini, in medio tui, Jerusalem.

Church of England 1662 Book of Common Prayer

English.png English text

1  I am well pleased: that the Lord hath heard the voice of my prayer;
2  That he hath inclined his ear unto me: therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.
3  The snares of death compassed me round about: and the pains of hell gat hold upon me.
4  I shall find trouble and heaviness,
  and I will call upon the Name of the Lord: O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.
5  Gracious is the Lord, and righteous: yea, our God is merciful.
6  The Lord preserveth the simple: I was in misery, and he helped me.
7  Turn again then unto thy rest, O my soul: for the Lord hath rewarded thee.
8  And why? thou hast delivered my soul from death: mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.
9  I will walk before the Lord: in the land of the living.
10  I believed, and therefore will I speak; but I was sore troubled:
  I said in my haste, All men are liars.
11  What reward shall I give unto the Lord: for all the benefits that he hath done unto me?
12  I will receive the cup of salvation: and call upon the Name of the Lord.
13  I will pay my vows now in the presence of all his people:
  right dear in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.
14  Behold, O Lord, how that I am thy servant: I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid;
thou hast broken my bonds in sunder.
15  I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving: and will call upon the Name of the Lord.
16  I will pay my vows unto the Lord, in the sight of all his people:
  in the courts of the Lord’s house, even in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord.

Metrical ‘Old Version’ (Thomas Norton)

English.png English text

I love the Lord, because the voice
Of my pray’r heard hath he;
I’ll ever call on him, because
He bowed his ear to me.

E’en when the snares of cruel death
About beset me round,
When pains of hell me caught, and when
I woe and sorrow found;

Upon the name of God the Lord
Then did I call and say,
Deliver thou my soul, O Lord,
I do thee humbly pray.

The Lord is very merciful,
And just he is also,
And in our God compassion doth
Most plentifully flow.

The Lord in safety doth preserve
All those that simple be;
I was in woeful misery,
And he deliver’d me.

And now, my soul, since thou art safe
Return unto thy rest,
For largely unto thee the Lord
His bounty hath expressed.

Because thou hast delivered
My soul from deadly thrall,
My moistened eyes from mournful tears,
My sliding feet from fall;

Before the Lord I in the land
Of life will walk therefore;
I did believe, therefore I spake,
But I was troubled sore.

The Second Part.
I said in my distress and fear,
That all men liars be
What shall I pay the Lord for all
His benefits to me?

The wholesome cup of saving health
I thankfully will take,
And on the name of God will call,
When I my pray’rs do make.

I to the Lord will pay my vows
With joy and great delight,
Now at this very present time
In all his people’s sight.

Right dear and precious in his sight
He always doth esteem
The death of all his holy ones,
Whatever men do deem.

Thy servant, Lord, thy servant, O,
I do myself confess,
Son of thy handmaid, thou hast broke
The bonds of my distress.

Therefore I’ll offer up to thee
A sacrifice of praise;
And I will call upon the name
Of God the Lord always.

I to the Lord will pay my vows
With joy and great delight,
Now at this very present time
In all his people’s sight:

Yea, in the courts of God’s own house,
And in the midst of thee,
O thou Jerusalem: therefore
The Lord our God praise ye.

Metrical ‘New Version’ (Tate & Brady)

English.png English text

My soul with grateful thoughts of love
Entirely is possess’d,
Because the Lord vouchsaf’d to hear
The voice of my request.

Since he has now his ear inclin’d,
I never will despair;
But still in all the straits of life
To him address my pray’r.

With deadly sorrows compass’d round,
With pains of hell oppress’d,
When troubles seiz’d my aching heart,
And anguish rack’d my breast;

On God’s Almighty name I call’d,
And thus to him I pray’d:
Lord, I beseech thee, save my soul,
With sorrows quite dismay’d.

How just and merciful is God!
How gracious is the Lord!
Who saves the harmless, and to me
Does timely help afford.

Then, free from pensive cares, my soul,
Resume thy wonted rest;
For God has wondrously to thee
His bounteous love express’d.

When death alarm’d me, he remov’d
My dangers and my fears:
My feet from falling he secur’d,
And dried my eyes from tears.

Therefore my life’s remaining years,
Which God to me shall lend,
Will I in praises to his name,
And in his service spend.

In God I trusted, and of him
In greatest straits did boast;
(For in my flight all hopes of aid
From faithless men were lost.)

Then what return to him shall I
For all his goodness make?
I’ll praise his name, and with glad zeal
The cup of blessing take.

I’ll pay my vows amongst his saints,
Whose blood (howe’er despis’d
By wicked men) in God’s account
Is always highly priz’d.

By various ties, O Lord, must I
To thy dominion bow;
Thy humble handmaid’s son before,
Thy ransom’d captive now.

To thee I’ll off’rings bring of praise;
And, whilst I bless thy name,
The just performance of my vows
To all thy saints proclaim.

They in Jerusalem shall meet,
And in thy house shall join,
To bless thy name with one consent,
And mix their songs with mine.

Metrical paraphrases by Isaac Watts

English.png English text

PART 1 (C. M.)
Recovery from sickness
I love the Lord; he heard my cries,
And pitied every groan;
Long as I live, when troubles rise,
I’ll hasten to his throne.

I love the Lord; he bowed his ear,
And chased my griefs away;
O let my heart no more despair,
While I have breath to pray!

My flesh declined, my spirits fell,
And I drew near the dead;
While inward pangs and fears of hell
Perplexed my wakeful head.

"My God," I cried, "thy servant save,
"Thou ever good and just;
Thy power can rescue from the grave,
Thy power is all my trust."

The Lord beheld me sore distressed,
He bid my pains remove
Return, my soul, to God thy rest,
For thou hast known his love.

My God hath saved my soul from death,
And dried my falling tears;
Now to his praise I’ll spend my breath,
And my remaining years.

PART 2 (C. M.)
Vows made in trouble paid in the church
What shall I render to my God
For all his kindness shown?
My feet shall visit thine abode,
My songs address thy throne.

Among the saints that fill thine house
My off’rings shall be paid;
There shall my zeal perform the vows
My soul in anguish made.

How much is mercy thy delight,
Thou ever-blessed God!
How dear thy servants in thy sight!
How precious is their blood!

How happy all thy servants are!
How great thy grace to me!
My life, which thou hast made thy care,
Lord, I devote to thee.

Now I am thine, for ever thine,
Nor shall my purpose move
Thy hand hath loosed my bonds of pain,
And bound me with thy love.

Here in thy courts I leave my vow,
And thy rich grace record;
Witness, ye saints, who hear me now,
If I forsake the Lord.

Metrical version by James Merrick

English.png English text

How glows with grateful love my breast!
For God the voice of my request
Accepts, and, while my hands I rear,
Bows to my plaint the willing ear:
For this, to life’s extremest hour,
My lips to him the pray’r shall pour.

While death its snares around me threw,
The grave, its horrors to my view
Presenting, press’d with heaviest grief,
From thee, great God, I sought relief:
‘O save me, heav’nly Sire, I cried,
And turn th’impending stroke aside.’

Great is our God, beyond all bound
His providence and pow’r are found;
Just, good, and kind, is Israel’s Lord,
His breast with tend’rest pity stor’d,
And prompt his arm, when ills invade,
The guileless and the meek to aid.

His mercies, ’midst thy deepest woe,
By blest experience taught to know,
Turn, turn thee to thy rest, my soul;
For he who sits above the pole
(Tremendous name) has o’er thy head
The fulness of his bounty shed.

Thou, mightiest Father, thou wert nigh,
To save my soul from death, mine eye
From tears, to guard from lapse my feet,
And bid me in this earthly seat
(Life’s wide dominion) still reside,
To thee in filial fear allied.

To God my heart resign’d its care;
To him my tongue address’d its pray’r:
While, struck with terrors as I stood,
A sea of sorrows round me flow’d,
‘No more, my soul, no more,’ I cried,
‘In Man’s fallacious aid confide.’

O, what requital at my hand
Shall mercies, Lord, like thine, demand?
By thee from each distress enlarg’d,
The cup with benediction charg’d
I take, and, touch’d with holy flame,
Invoke my great Deliv’rer’s name.

Ev’n now, before th’assembled train,
Ev’n now, within thy sacred fane,
(That fane, whose Walls, on firmest base
Uprear’d, fair Salem’s confines grace,)
Behold me at thine altar bow,
And, pleas’d, absolve my offer’d vow.

Who thy decrees, great God, obey,
Secure on thee their hope shall slay;
Nor fraud nor rapine’s iron hand
Shall dare to touch the pious band,
For sacred is their blood, and high
Its price in thy paternal eye.

In me thy servant, Lord, in me
The offspring of thy handmaid see,
Releas’d by thee, from day to day
The sacrifice of praise to pay
I joy, and, touch’d with holy flame,
Invoke my great deliv’rer’s name.

Ev’n now, before th’assembled train,
Ev’n now within thy sacred fane,
(That fane, whose walls, on firmest base
Uprear’d, fair Salem’s confines grace,)
Behold me at thine altar bow,
And, pleas’d, absolve my offer’d vow.
Hallelujah.

Alleluja! Szeretem, mert az Úr meghallgatta könyörgésem szavát;
mert hozzám hajtotta fülét, azért segítségűl hívom őt napjaimban.
Körűlvettek engem a halál gyötrelmei; és a pokol veszedelmei elértek engem; szorongatást és fájdalmat találtam;
Térj vissza nyugalmadba, és lelkem! mert az Úr jót tett veled;
