Natalya Kolesnichenko was born in Volgograd, probably around 1960. She studied at the Conductors' Schola (Регентской Школы) of the Theological Seminary in Leningrad. Archimandrite Kirill (the current patriarch of Moscow), who was rector of the Seminary from 1974, opened this Schola to female students. Kolesnichenko was the first female composer graduating there, and perhaps also the first female composer of slavonic church music.
