Nacht, o Nacht, du heil'ge Nacht,
breitest deinen Friedensschleier
über Wiese, Wald und Weiher,
wehest süße, süße Ruh'
liebend allen Müden zu.

Nacht, o Nacht, du heil'ge Nacht,
hebest uns in Traumgebilden
auf zu schöneren Gefilden,
leitest lächelnd uns zum Glück,
kehrten nie doch wir zurück!

Nacht, o Nacht, du heil'ge Nacht,
lass auch jetzt in deinem Arme
ruhen mich nach langem Harme;
webe Liebchen hold und mild,
tröstend in mein Traumgebild!

English translation

Lovely night! O lovely night,
spreading over hill and meadow
soft an slow thy hazy shadow,
soon our wearied eyelids close,
slumber in thy blest repose.

placing brighter worlds before us,
happiness thou sheddest o'er us,
o that we might ne'er return
