2. Bereitet doch fein tüchtig den Weg dem großen Gast;
macht seine Steige richtig, lasst alles, was er hasst;
macht niedrig, was hoch stehet, was krumm ist, gleich und schlicht.
3. Ein Herz, das Demut liebet, bei Gott am höchsten steht;
ein Herz, das Hochmut übet, mit Angst zugrunde geht;
English translation
1. Prepare your hearts, O children, with serious intent
So that the Lord, our Savior, who has to us been sent
By God through grace alone to bring the world salvation,
His light and love’s expression may find in you a home.
2. Prepare a way that's proper for this most honored Guest,
and make His pathway level, strive only for the best;
Make all His highway smooth, all valleys now make higher,
all hills and mountains lower, the crooked, straight and true.
3. A humble heart will always stand high in God’s esteem;
a prideful heart will always be lost to stress and strain;
a righteous heart is one that follows God’s direction
with proper preparation, to him will Jesus come.
4. O Christ, help me, poor sinner, in this so sacred hour,
from out Thy boundless mercy for You myself prepare!
Come now into my heart from cow stall and from manger,
and I in love and fervor shall heartfelt thanks impart.
