Italian text
Mia benigna fortuna e il viver lieto,
i chiari giorni et le tranquille notti
e i soavi sospiri e il dolce stile
che solea resonare in versi e in rime,
vòlti subitamente in doglia e in pianto,
odiar vita mi fanno, et bramar morte.
Crudel, acerba, inexorabil Morte,
(Petrarca: Canzoniere 332)
English translation
My kind fortune and joy in life,
the bright days and the tranquil nights,
the sweet sighs and the amiable style
that once resonated in my verses and my rhymes,
now suddenly changed to pain and weeping,
make me hate life and long for death.
Cruel, harsh, inexorable Death,
you give me cause never again to be joyful,
and to live out my whole life in tears,
in sombre days and doleful nights.
My heavy sighs will not be rhymed
and my bitter torment overpowers all styles.
