French text Mauldicte soit la mondaine richesse, Qui m'a osté m'Amye, et Maistresse. Las par vertu j'ay son amytié quise, Mais par richesse ung aultre l'a conquise : Vertu n'a pas en amour grand prouesse. Modern French Maudite soit la mondaine richesse qui m'a enlevé ma dame et maîtresse. Las, par vertu, je suis quitte de mon amitié. Par richesse, un autre l'a conquise, vertu en amour n'a pas grande utilité.

English translation A curse upon the wealth for which we strive, Of which my lady love did me deprive. Alas, with virtue I her favor sought, But with wealth another my lady bought; In love ‘gainst wealth mere virtue can’t survive. Translation by Thomas Daughton
