Description: Originally this song is a pilgrimage song, which was widespread in Thuringia in the middle of the 19th century. The motif of the child being carried through the forest is connected with the baptism of Jesus. In the course of the 20th century, the song is gradually used as an Advent song. Although there are earlier dates of the song, they cannot be established with certainty. However, Andernach's hymnal from 1608 contains a reference to a song Jesum und seine Mutter, which was to be sung to the tune of Maria durch diesen Wald. At the request of an acquaintance I made a choral arrangement of this melody. Several arrangements of the melody are known, including by Hugo Distler from his early cycle Der Jahrkreis.
