The Visitation by Juan Correa De Vivar

The Visitation by Juan Correa De Vivar

Originating from the Latin word for "magnify," the Magnificat is the name given to the words of Mary in Luke's Gospel, beginning "My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." According to the gospel, Mary, while pregnant with Jesus, visited her cousin Elisabeth, who was at he time pregnant with John the Baptist. In response to Elisabeth's salutation Ave Maria, she spoke the words of the Magnificat.

It is often set to music coupled with Nunc dimittis, as both are sung during the evening service (see Evening Canticles).

Text and translations

Latin.png Latin text (Most musical settings of the Magnificat will append the minor doxology, Gloria Patri.)

Magnificat anima mea Dominum
Fecit potentiam in bracchio suo, dispersit superbos mente cordis sui.

Amen.

Amen.

English.png English translation The Book of Common Prayer, 1662:
(Most musical settings of the Evening Canticles in English will use this text, followed by the minor doxology, Gloria Patri.)

MY soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Another translation:
My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

Metrical Version - From A New Version of the Psalms of David by Brady and Tate
My soul and spirit, filled with joy,
My God and Saviour praise,
Whose goodness did from poor estate
His humble handmaid raise.

Me bless'd of God, the God of pow'r,
All ages shall confess;
Whose Name is holy, and whose love,
His saints shall ever bless

The proud, and all their vain designs,
He quickly did confound ;
He cast the mighty from their seat,
The meek and humble crown'd.

The hungry with good things were filled,
The rich with hunger pined:
He sent his servant Israel help,
And called his love to mind;

Which to our fathers heretofore
By oath he did ensure,
To Abra'm and his chosen seed
Forever to endure.

Template:PortugueseText A minha alma glorifica o Senhor
Amen.
