German text 1. Jesu, deine Passion will ich jetzt bedenken; wollest mir von Himmelsthron Geist und Andacht schenken. In dem Bilde jetzt erschein, Jesu, meinem Herzen, wie du, unser Heil zu sein, littest alle Schmerzen. 2. Meine Seele sehen mach deine Angst und Bande, deine Schläge, deine Schmach, deine Kreuzesschande, deine Geißel, Dornenkron', Speerund Nägelwunden, deinen Tod, o Gottes Sohn, der mich dir verbunden. 3. Doch laß mich ja nicht allein deine Marter sehen, laß mich auch die Ursach' fein und die Frucht verstehen. Ach, dir Ursach' war auch ich, ich und meine Sünde. Diese hat gemartert dich, daß ich Gnade finde. 4. Jesu, lehr bedenken mich dies mit Buß und Reue, hilf, daß ich mit Sünde dich martre nicht aufs neue. Sollt ich dazu haben Lust und nicht wollen meiden, was du selber büßen mußt mit so großem Leiden? 5.  Wenn mich meine Sünde will schrecken mit der Hölle, Jesu, mein Gewissen still, dich ins Mittel stelle. Dich und deine Passion laß mich gläubig fassen; liebet mich sein lieber Sohn, wie kann Gott mich hassen? 6.  Gib auch, Jesu, daß ich gern dir das Kreuz nachtrage, daß ich Demut von dir lern und Geduld in Plage, daß ich dir geb Lieb' um Lieb'. Indeß laß dies Lallen, —bessern Dank ich dorten geb'— Jesu, dir gefallen.

English translation 1. Jesus, to Your Passion's hour I turn my reflection; You to me from heaven pour courage and devotion. Show to me Your image now in my heart’s depiction how Your suff'ring here below purchased our salvation. 2. Jesus, cause my heart to face Your dread bonds and torment, vicious blows and sore disgrace, shameful cross, Your life spent, and your scourging, thorny crown, brutal nail and spear wounds, and your death with head bowed down. All bind me close to You. 3. But let me not only see martyrdom and grievance, let me also strive to see cause, effect, and reason. I know I was cause, in truth, I and all my sinning. All my sins have martyred You, while I grace am winning. 4. Jesus, teach me how to view this with true repentance. Help that I by sins anew not renew Your sentence. How could I find joy in sin and not seek to banish, knowing that its price has been paid by Your great anguish? 5. If my sin should threaten me with Hell's awful terror, Jesus, place Yourself between conscience and my error. To Your Passion, You alone, may my heart in faith cleave. If I'm loved by His dear Son, how can God reject me? 6. Lord, help me take up the cross, follow Your way bravely. Teach me humble strength in loss, patience suff'ring gravely, that I give You love for love. Meanwhile, may this blather-- better thanks in heav'n I'll give— Jesus, give You pleasure.
