Description: A 5 part verse anthem, transcribed from Cathedral Music, Volume 2 (William Boyce). The entry for Blow by Watkins Shaw in Grove's dictionary indicates that this work is an adaptation of Blow's anthem "And I heard", which had an accompaniment consisting of an ensemble of 2 violins, viola, cello, continuo and organ. It is likely, therefore, that the organ accompaniment in this version of "I was in the spirit" represents a reduction by Boyce of a fuller original version.

From Revelation, chapters 1 and 19
I was in the spirit on the lord's day. And I heard a great voice of much people in heaven saying Hallelujah.
Salvation and glory and honour and power unto the lord our god.
For true and righteous are his judgments. And again they said Hallelujah.
And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped god that sat on the throne saying Amen.
And a voice came out of the throne, saying praise our god, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him both small and great.
And I heard as it were, as it were, the voice of a great multitude and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying Hallelujah.
For the lord god omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice and give honour to him. For the marriage of the lamb is come.
