English.png English text

1. I know not why God's wondrous grace
to me he has made known,
nor why, unworthy, Christ in love
redeemed me for his own.

But "I know whom I have believed
and am persuaded that he is able
to keep that which I've committed
unto him against that day."

2. I know not how this saving faith
to me he did impart,
nor how believing in his Word
wrought peace within my heart.
But

3. I know not how the Spirit moves,
convincing us of sin,
revealing Jesus through the Word,
creating faith in him.
But ...

4. I know not what of good or ill

But ...

5. I know not when my Lord may come,
at night or noonday fair
nor if I'll walk the vale with Him,
or "meet Him in the air."
But ...

1. Ich weiß nicht, warum Gottes Gnad
mir je ward offenbar,
noch warum ich erlöset bin,
der ich ein Sünder war.

Doch ich weiß, an welchen ich glaube,
und seiner Hand kann mich nichts entreißen;
mein Erbteil wird er mir wahren
auf den Tag, da er erscheint.

2.  Ich weiß nicht, wie die Glaubenskraft
mein Gott mir mitgeteilt,
noch wie der Glaube an sein Wort
den Seelenschmerz geheilt.
Doch ...

3. Ich weiß nicht, wie der heilge Geist
mich Sünder überzeugt,
wie Jesum er in mir verklärt
und alle Not verscheucht.
Doch ...

4. Ich weiß nicht, wieviel Freud und Leid
der Herr mir zugedacht,
wie er mich führt durch Licht und Nacht,
bis einst mein Lauf vollbracht.
Doch ...

5. Ich weiß nicht, wann der Herr erscheint,
weiß weder Tag noch Stund,
ob durch den Tod er rufen wird,
ob durch der Engel Mund.
Doch ...
