Biography

George Sandys was the youngest son of Edwin Sandys, archbishop of York: he travelled extensively, was an early settler in Virginia, and wrote paraphrases in verse of parts of Ovid's Metamorphoses, Virgil's Aeneid, and biblical texts. His paraphrases of the psalms were set to music by William and Henry Lawes.
