Description: The text of this madrigal comes from the sixth of the intermedii telling the story af Cupid and Psyche, which were performed, together with the comedy „La Cofanaria“ by Francesco d‘Ambra, at the wedding of Francesco de' Medici and Johanna von Österreich, daughter of the emperor Ferdinand I., in Florence in 1565. There the text was sung by Psyche to music by Alessandro Striggio.

Original text and translations
The four companions of Psyche named in the poem (Invidia…“) are also prominent in the plot of the intermedio, hence it may be assumed that it was also written by Cini. The text as printed in „La Cofanaria“ in 1566 has „distruggi“ instead of „ti struggi“, besides some other minor ones which have no impact on the meaning; these original versions are added in square brackets). The four names of the companions have been capitalised here as they are in this source.
