1. Die helle Sonn' leucht't jetzt herfür,
frölich vom Schlaf aufstehen wir.
Gott Lob, der uns in dieser Nacht
behütet vor des Teufels Macht!

2. Herr Christ, den Tag uns auch behüt
vor Sünd' und Schand' durch deine Güt',
laß deine lieben Engelein
unsre Hüter und Wächter sein.

3. Laß unser Werk geraten wohl,
was ein jeder ausrichten soll,
daß unsre Arbeit, Müh' und Fleiß
gereich zu dei'm Lob, Ehr' und Preis.
(Melchior Vulpius, 1609)

English.png English translation

1. The sun is shining, clear and bright,
and joyously we greet the light.
Praise God, who brought us through this night
and kept us from the Devil's might.

2. Lord Christ, protect us through the day,
by your good grace, from sin and shame.
And set Your angel at our side
who will watch, protect us, and guide.

3. May what we do succeed this day,
as each one takes a diff’rent way,
and may our labor bring to You
the praise and honor that are due.
