General Information

Title: Der Himmel lacht! Die Erde jubilieret, BWV 31
Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Lyricist: Salomon Franck

Number of voices: 5vv   Voicing: SSATB

Genre: SacredCantata for Easter Sunday

Language: German
Instruments: Orchestra: 3 trumpets, timpani, 3 oboes, taille, [bassoon], strings, bc

First published: 1857 in Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe, Band 7
Opus: BWV 31, 9 movements
Description: Composed at Weimar in 1715 and revised at Leipzig 1724 & 1731. Only some of the original parts survive, making details of instrumentation unclear: the mostly colla parte reeds may have been added in 1716; only the top two oboe parts may have been played (on oboe d'amore) at Leipzig; and the 5-part chorus appears to have been sung SATB after 1731.
