French.png French text

Dedans Tournay, ville jolie
un jour passant mélancolie,
je pris alliance nouvelle
à la plus gente damoiselle
qu'il soit, je le vous certifie,
d'honnesteté, elle est saisie,
et croy, selon ma fantaisie,
qu'il m'en soit guère de plus belle
Dedans Tournay, ville jolie.

Cf. Marot's original rondeau:
Dedans Paris, ville jolie,
Un jour, passant mélancolie,
Je pris alliance nouvelle
À la plus gaie damoiselle
Qui soit d’ici en Italie.
D’honnêteté elle est saisie,
Et crois, selon ma fantaisie
Qu’il n’en est guère de plus belle
Dedans Paris.

Je ne vous la nommerai mie,
Sinon que c’est ma grand amie;
Car l’alliance se fit telle
Par un doux baiser que j’eus d’elle,
Sans penser aucune infamie
Dedans Paris.

English.png English translation

In old Tournay, that beautiful town,
One day to escape my feeling down,
I decided to give it a whirl
With a most sweet and willing young girl
She is, I tell you with certainty,
The very picture of purity,
And I believe, in my fantasy,
That she might be the most perfect pearl
In old Tournay, that beautiful town.
