Coridon lest op de waecke
hoord' een lieffelijke stem,
't docht hem sijn een enghels spraeke
die al soetjes riep tot hem,
sa comt herders bij het kint,
siet hoe Jesus u bemint.
Comt wilt in den stal gaen soecken,
comt siet daer een wonder kint,
in een crebb' op slechte doecken,
in den stuerren noorder wint.
Comt hier uwen Schepper loven,
uwen coninck ende God,
die woont in den hemel boven,
licht nu in een beestenstal.
English translation by Mick Swithinbank
Not long ago, while guarding his animals,
Coridon heard a charming voice;
it sounded like an angel
calling him sweetly:
'Come, shepherds, to the child,
see how Jesus loves you.
Come to the stable,
come and see a miraculous child,
lying in a crib on miserable rags,
in the biting north wind.
Come here and praise your Creator:
your king and God,
whose home is in heaven above,
is now lying in a stall belonging to a beast.'
