Description: Seven nineteenth-century anonymous Polish carols, arranged, harmonised, and with texts translated by, Douglas Brooks-Davies. Some of the carols may easily be sung unaccompanied, and they do not necessarily have to be sung in sequence. I have included all stanzas for the carols, but as this makes some of them rather long, please feel free to cut at will.

Wsrod nocnej ciszy
(Into this night's stillness)

Into this night's stillness bursts the joyful call:
'Rise now, you shepherds, God is born to all.
Speed, oh speed to Beth'lem's stable,
Fast, as fast as you are able,
To greet your Lord!'

They sought and found Him as the voice had said,
The baby Jesus in manger for a bed.
Then the Baby they all honoured,
Worshipped Him as their true Lord,
With greatest joy!

They greeted their Redeemer, promised from times past,
After long years here on earth at last:
'Kings and prophets waited for you,
But to us poor shepherds only You are revealed.

And now, too, we await You, our dearest Lord,
By our priest here given to be adored.
As we kneel You are beside us,
Bread and wine reveal You to us
Present here today!

A coz z ta Dziecina
(Oh, this Babe that's weeping)

Oh, this Babe that's weeping,
How can we stop His crying?
Sing a song of joy and gladness
That will drive away His sadness,

Ah! He frets with hunger,
He shall weep no longer.
With milk and bread He shall be fed,
That will clear His weepy head.

Will another tune brighten Him
On a whistle made of tin?
Will another tune brighten Him
On a bagpipe made of skin?

Li, li, li, bring a bagpipe,
Stop His gripes with bagpipes,
Li, li, li, li!

See! the pipes have stopped His wailing;
See His peeping eyes twinkling.
We will rock Him with a song,
Wish Him slumber that shall be long!

Ach! the Babe has woken,
How can this be!
Why can't You sleep, One, two and three?
Quiet ass and quiet oxen!

Let the Babe sleep while Mary rocks Him,
Sleep, sleep, sleep, sleep.

No soft cradle
1. No soft cradle,
Where the Child is lying;
No soft cradle,
Baby cease your crying.

2. No soft cradle,
Mary watch is keeping;
No soft cradle,
Baby now is sleeping.

3. In a manger, no soft cradle,
Babe no more is sleeping.
No soft cradle in earth's darkness,
Soon He will be dying.

Jesus Malusienki
(Little Jesus is crying)

Little Jesus is crying,
In the stable He's lying,
Weeping in the bitter cold
For there is no cloth to warm Him,
Rough hay stabs at His head,
Blows and snatches at His head,
Yet it is His only clothing
In the stable where He's lying,

There's no rocking,
There's no pillow,
Just a manger in the byre
And the hay, sharp as sharpest wire.

Heart-broken by His weeping,
His Mother looks with love so warming
At her Baby lying there
In harsh, cold bed for one so fair,
Mary, weary with sorrow,
With unbearable sorrow,
Sees His weeping and wailing now
As the dark shadow of the morrow.

Gdy sliczna Panna
(As the lovely Maiden)

1. As the lovely maiden cradled herdear Child,
She rocked Him gently, crooning withoice mild:
'Li li li, my darling dearest Child of mine,
Li li li, my dearest, Lovely, lovely Child.'

2.All those gentle words the maiden sang to Him,
From her heart so joyful, pure and free from sin.
'Li li li, my Kingling, greatest Kingling mine,
Li li li, my Kingling, greatest heavenly King!'

3.Then the host of angels, gathered all above Him,
Sang with the maiden Their own song of love:
'Li li li, earth's flower, loveliest flow'r of all,
Li li li, earth's flower, O holiest Child of all!'

Oj Maluski, Maluski, Maluski
(O my tiny, tiny, Baby)

O Malushki, my Baby, my Baby
Tiny, oh so tiny,

Precious, small as may be.
Small as tiniest glove
Small as tiniest nut
on angel's violin bow.
O my dearest Jesus mild,
darling Child, darling Child.

Wouldn't you, o tiny Child,
Better be by far
Back in heaven with your loving Papa
From whom you're now exiled.

You have come, said the messenger angels,
To serve us all so humbly,
And dwell with us, o small naked Baby,
In loneliest poverty.

Up in heaven you were so warm;
Now chill is all around you,
And in the chill is much harm,
And weeping to confound you.

O Malushki, my Baby, my Baby

And so, O most gracious Lady,
To heav'n He must go back,
Or live oh most humbly among us,
To redeem our days so black.

Lulajze Jezuniu
(Lullaby, Jesus)

1. Lullaby, Jesus, my dear pearl, my treasure;
Lullay, my darling, my joy beyond measure.
Lullay, little Jesus, hush now, be sleeping,
Mary is near, there's no need for weeping.

2. Close those little eye lids, so weary with crying,
Hush now, be calm now, and quieten Thy sobbing.
Lullay, little Jesus, hush now, be sleeping,
Mary is near, there's no need for weeping.

3. Hush now, lullay, dear, my blossom so lovely,
Bright as the angels that hover above Thee.
Lullay, little Jesus, hush now, be sleeping,
Mary is near, there's no need for weeping.

4. Lullay, my rosebud, the world's best adorning,
Lullay, my lily, lovely as the morning.
Lullay, little Jesus, hush now, be sleeping,
Mary is near, there's no need for weeping.

5. Sleep now, my pleasure, with eyes bright as starlight,
Lullay, lullay, dear, my loved one, as sun bright.
Lullay, little Jesus, hush now, be sleeping,
Mary is near, there's no need for weeping.

6. Hush, hush, my Baby, so wakeful, don't weep;
Our sweetest lovely, O go now to sleep.
Lullay, little Jesus, lullay, little Jesus,
Sleep now, sleep, sleep, sleep,
O sleep, little Babe. Sleep.
