German.png German text

1. Christ, der du bist der helle Tag,
vor dir die Nacht nicht bleiben mag,
du leuchtes uns vom Vater her
und bist des Lichtest Prediger.

2. Ach lieber Herr, behüt uns heint
in dieser Nacht vor'm bösen Feind
und laß uns in dir ruhen fein
und vor dem Satan sicher sein.

3. So schlafen wir im Namen dein,
dieweil dein' Engel bei uns sein.
Du heilige Dreifaltigkeit,
wir loben dich in Ewigkeit.
(15th cent. Lat.,
Erasmus Alber (1500 – 1551)

English.png English translation

1. Lord Christ, You are the Light of day,
from You the darkness must away,
You radiate the Father's light,
disperse the dark, restore the Light.

2. O dearest Lord, guard us this night,
protect us from the Devil's might,
and may we sweetly rest in You
in sleep and safe from Satan's rule.

3. So now in Your dear Name we sleep,
while Your dear angel watch will keep.
Our holy Lord, the Trinity,
we give You praise eternally.
