German text 1. Christ, der du bist der helle Tag, vor dir die Nacht nicht bleiben mag, du leuchtes uns vom Vater her und bist des Lichtest Prediger. 2. Ach lieber Herr, behüt uns heint in dieser Nacht vor'm bösen Feind und laß uns in dir ruhen fein und vor dem Satan sicher sein. 3. So schlafen wir im Namen dein, dieweil dein' Engel bei uns sein. Du heilige Dreifaltigkeit, wir loben dich in Ewigkeit. (15th cent. Lat., Erasmus Alber (1500 – 1551)

English translation 1. Christ, You who are the Light of day, with You the night cannot prevail, You bring to us the Father's light; You are the Minister of Light. 2. O dearest Lord, guard us this night and keep all evil from our sight, and let us rest the night in You and keep us safe from Satan's rule. 3. So now in Your dear Name we sleep, while Your dear angel watch will keep. Our holy Lord, the One in Three, we give You praise eternally.
