Introduction
A musical era is a generally recognized time period in which certain musical styles and forms develop. There are seven eras recognized at CPDL:

There are other time classes of music. The general term early music is usually considered to cover the Medieval and Renaissance periods.
Medieval era
The Medieval era in Europe lasted from about 400 to about 1500, fifth through fifteenth centuries.
Renaissance era
The Renaissance era in Europe comprised the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Baroque era
The Baroque era in Europe and America lasted from the early seventeenth century to the middle of the eighteenth century. Baroque composers, listed alphabetically. All Baroque music scores at CPDL, listed alphabetically.
Classical era
The Classical musical era in Europe and America is usually considered to be from the muddle of the eighteenth century to the early to middle nineteenth century, although classical style works continued through the nineteenth century.
Romantic era
The Romantic era lasted through the nineteenth century, with some works continuing into the early twentieth century.
Early 20th century era
Usually considered to be the period between 1900 and mid-century.
