Life
Born: 3 March 1890 in Osimo, Ancona, Italy
Died: 6 August 1975
Biography: He was a priest and Moderator of the Cathedral in Pittsburgh. Rev. Carlo Rossini was organist-conductor-composer who served 27 years as choirmaster at St. Paul's Catholic Cathedral in Oakland. He studied in the Pontifical Institute of Music in Rome and was invited to Pittsburgh to become the Cathedral's organist and choirmaster. As chairman of the diocesan Music commission, Father Rossini implemented Church decrees on liturgical music to a point that elevated Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese high in the music realm of the Church. He organized the Pittsburgh Polyphonic Choir which toured the nation. Father Rossini has composed 20 Masses, including his popular "Adeste fideles" Christmas Mass and his "Missa Solemnis", which he wrote for his Golden Jubilee on 19 May 1963. His compilations and arrangements of hymns, motets and incidental music number in the hundreds - 15 volumes of organ music, 10 volumes of motets and 6 volumes of chant. Summoned to Rome in 1950, he was commissioned to reorganize the Italian Society of St. Caecilia for church musicians. Pope Pius XII awarded him the Gold Medal "Benemerenti".
