Amato s’amerai;
Ama, Clori gentil, ch’al fin sarai
Amata s’amerai.
Gode la Ninfa in riamar chi l’ama,
Così l’un l’altro amando
Lieti d’amor sen gian sempre cantando.

Liebe, treuer Hirte, damit zuletzt
du geliebt wirst, wenn du liebst;

English.png English translation

Pretty Clori, you are
of the nymphs the honour, the glory and the prize,
listen, as I from a true heart ask for love.
I love you more than myself, and desire
that your wish should be satisfied rather than mine.
I lvoe you so, that never another one will desire you more,
if you, Clori, only love me.

Thus spoke the shepherd
to her, and sheto him, when he fell silent:
Love, faithful shepherd, so that in the end
you will be loved if you will love;
Love, pretty Clori, so that in the end
you will be loved if you will love.
Glad is the shepherd that the nymph desires to love,
glad is the nymph to return love to him who loves her.
Thus loving each other
they departed, happy of love, ever singing.
