  • (Posted 2021-03-15)  CPDL #63488:
Editor: Andrew Sims (submitted 2021-03-15).   Score information: A4, 11 pages, 223 kB   Copyright: CPDL
Edition notes: A bar-less edition of the motet; the division between the voices has been altered at the beginning of the piece.

Editor: Jason Smart (submitted 2020-06-30).   Score information: A4, 7 pages, 266 kB   Copyright: CC BY NC ND
Edition notes: Edited from the two surviving sixteenth-century sources at the original pitch for STTBarB. Original note values retained. A version of this edition with halved note values appears at #54833 below. Robert Dow’s set of partbooks is the only source to preserve all the voices of Parsons’s motet. Unfortunately Dow’s text is unreliable, as he was prone to alter the underlay and note values of the music he copied to suit his taste. The other source, a single partbook from an otherwise lost set, is more trustworthy. It reveals some of the ways in which Dow altered Parsons’s music and, where Dow was inconsistent, which of his alternative readings are correct: see the critical commentary appended to the score. This partbook forms the basis of this edition and its readings are extrapolated to the other parts to return the underlay and note values to a state closer to Parsons’s lost original.

Original text and translations

Original text and translations may be found at Ave Maria. N.B. Parsons' setting utilises the shorter version of the text that was prevalent prior to the additional words (Sancta Maria etc./Holy Mary etc.) appended by St Petrus Canisius in the catechism instigated by the Council of Trent in 1566.
