The brown leaves of Autumn wild winds whirl around,
The brown leaves of Autumn wail over the ground:
Now all things are dying! Thou'rt faded and sere!
O forest, our father, thy last end is here.

The old, royal forest hears not their lament,
The dark purple skies o'er his slumbers are bent,
And strange, mighty visions their spells o'er him fling,
Within him are rip'ning new pow'rs for the Spring!
