Au feu, venez moi secourir,
Tous vrais amants, voyez la grande offense,
À tort amour me brûle sans mourir.

A l'eau, à l'eau, jette-toi vitement,

Ins Wasser, ins Wasser wirf dich schnell,
und dir versagt, was du ersehnst,

Fire, come to my help,
all true lovers, behold the great misdeed,
unjustly love burns me, without making me die.
And if I have no defense against it,
oh cruel distress which keeps me suffering,
then let me enjoy that which I desire,
or keep my heart in such good hope,
that hoping I don’t waste my time.

Into water cast yourself quickly,
and you will sense alleviation to your woe,
too hot you were to put yourself forward,
without thinking of the mighty power of love.
Hence, if grief makes you so much suffer
and denies to you which you desire,
console yourself or live in hope,
for many wear off their time as you do.
