Revision as of 23:01, 19 July 2013
The prayer Anima Christi is mentioned as early as 1330 and is widely found in its present form later in the 14th century. Ignatius of Loyola prefaced his Exercitia spiritualia (1548) with it, on which basis it is sometimes mistakenly attributed to him.
Some English paraphrases are the anonymous "Soul of my Saviour" which first appeared with William J. Maher's 10 10. 10 10 tune ANIMA CHRISTI in 1864; Thomas Ball's "Sanctify me wholly"(76. 76. D); & The English Hymnal's (1906) anonymous "Soul of Jesus, make me whole," (77. 77. D); more are mentioned here.
