Edition notes: This edition is a public outcome of the BBC's 'Choral Ambition' scheme, supported by the BBC Performing Arts Fund. The aim of the project was to unearth a 'lost' piece of music for performance and publication. Please visit the external web link for detailed information about the project, and about Hooper, including the recording of the 'Flat' Service canticles released by the Renaissance Singers.

General Information

Title: The 'Flat' Service - Nunc dimittis
Composer: Edmund Hooper

Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: SATB, plus verse solos
Genre: SacredEvening Canticles

Language: English
Instruments: Organ

First published: 2013
Description: Reconstructed by David Allinson from the Batten organ book (Tenbury Wells collection held in the Oxford Bodleian Library). The music survives uniquely in this source, where it is untexted and incomplete, though there are a few textual cues and verse sections are marked (though it is not specified which voices are involved). In the score, small notes are editorial. A few editorial dynamics are included in the organ part, to help conductors. Note that the final few bars of the Amen are freshly composed, as here the entire texture is lost.
