Edition notes: Modern grammatical additions and updated spellings – such as fillus (“son”) replacing filis and prophetarum (“apostles”) replacing prophectarum – have been made to the text for clarity.
The following notational corrections were made for this transcription:
1. Bass, m. 29, beat 4: F changed from dotted 32nd to dotted 16th.
2. Tenor 2, m. 41, beat 1: (sixteenth) A changed to G.
3. Tenor 2, m. 56, beat 1: quarter rest inserted.
4. Continuo, m. 64, beat 2: ‘#’ figure above G, indicating a G major chord, conflicts with the B-flats of the Tenor 1 part, and has been ignored.
5. Continuo, m. 77, beat 2: eighth rest inserted.

General Information

Title: Litanie della Madonna
Composer: Giovanni Rovetta
Lyricist: Giovanni Rovetta
Number of voices: 3vv   Voicing: TTB
Genre: SacredSacred song

Language: Latin
Instruments: Basso continuo

First published: 1635
Description: As is often the case in works of this period, the parts indicate that soprano(s) may sing one (or both) of the tenor parts. The text follows in the Catholic tradition of litanies, by presenting a series of entreaties, in this case to the Madonna, each often followed by ora pro nobis (“pray for us”). During its approximately six minutes, the three voices at times present the same text in harmony, at times present petitions sequentially and with melodic variation, and at times present varied text.
