1. Wohlauf mit mir auf diesen Plan,
ein Tanz will ich euch stellen an!
Dabei müßt ihr mir all' erscheinen,
ihr tut gleich lachen oder weinen.
2. Macht auf, ihr Geiger, einen Tanz,
dem Kaiser bind ich da ein Kranz;
eur' Majestät wöll einherprangen,
man wird ein Galliard anfangen.
3. Hört zu, ihr König, laß euch sag'n,
das Glöcklein hat den Garaus g'schlag'n!
Eu'r Hofgesind' laßt steh'n beiseite,
tanzt, wie ihr wöllt, Welsch oder Deutsche!
4. Ihr Bauern und ihr Burgersleut;
ihr jungen G'sellen, seid bereit:
es hilft kein Panzer gegen mich:
all's muß zu Boden, was ich triff'.
5. Derhalben läßt's euch sein gesagt:
fürcht' euch! Der Tod ist unverzagt.
Kein's Menschen Teil er hier verschonet,
sei'm Tanz muß alles Fleisch beiwohnen.
6. Das Fleisch mag sein zum Tanz bereit:
der Tod die arme Seel' befreit.
Sein Bitternis ward ganz zu Schanden,
da Christ vom Tod ist auferstanden.
English translation
1. Come all with me; strike up the band.
A dance for you is what I’ve planned!
You all must join me in this madness,
though it may bring you joy or sadness.
2. Come on, you fiddlers, start the tune;
we’ll have the emp’ror dancing soon.
Your Majesty, you must now join in;
a galliard is just now beginning.
3. O king, it’s your turn, come, join in;
the bell has rung and done you in!
Your servants stand aside in ermine;
dance as you will, in Welsh or German!
4. You commoners and city folk
and you young people, go for broke.
There is no armor can resist;
all must join in, I do insist.
5. Let me be clear: take care and fear,
for Death will not be thwarted here.
No kind of person will be spared,
for all must dance; it’s been declared.
6. All flesh must be ready to dance,
and Death may ease your souls, perchance.
It’s bitterness to shame is given
since Christ from death and grave has risen.
