German text Wenn die Nacht mit süßer Ruh längst die Müden lohnet geh ich auf das Hüttchen zu wo mein Mädchen wohnet, wünsch ich noch um Mitternacht eine süße, gute Nacht; flüstre: Liebchen! schlafe wohl, ferne jeden Kummer! denn mein Herz ist liebevoll selbst im tiefsten Schlummer. Oft im Traume, glaube mir, schwör ich treue Liebe dir.

English translation Oft when eve has rest bestowed, Day's fatigue dispelling, Quietly I seek the road To my loved one's dwelling; Her I wish, at evening's close, Undisturbed and sweet repose; Whisp'ring, dear, once more good night! Banish every sorrow, May our souls in sleep unite Until dawn of morrow. All my dreams are fraught with thee, Dream but half as oft of me.
