Qui Paracletus diceris (Michael Praetorius)

Very nice work! I added Praetorius to the text-page Veni Creator Spiritus, but realized I dont know anything about text variants. Would you have a go at explaining MP's version? Richard Mix 07:19, 28 January 2012 (CST)

Thanks! Praetorius made many settings of different verses, for various voice combinations. (If I had regular access to Hymnodia Sionia, I would've transcribed them all; as it is I had to chose just a few that I had time to transcribe...) The way you've listed it on the text page is just how I would've done it, so no worries there. Hopefully someday I'll be able to do the rest. Ross Jallo 19:36, 13 February 2012 (CST)

Hi Ross, yet another tip: the template {{ss}} is perfect for what you intended (sorting composer names by surname in a table column). I have applied it to you table for you to see it in action, but if your intention was really to have the surnames coming first, then please feel free to revert my last edit, ok? Diligam te Domine Hassler

Ross, I've moved the link text for this to Diligam te Domine. There's been a lot of discussion among the administrators as to what one does when a part of a work is used separately from the whole. An example is Tantum ergo, which (as you probably know) is part of the longer Pange lingua. Because many people will want to view settings specifically of Tantum ergo, it seems sensible to have separate text pages, but with clear links between them.

This is even more the case with the psalms. Many verses are used for graduals, offertories and so on and, unless the searcher knows that a text is part of a specific psalm, searching for settings becomes more complicated. A further complication is that the sorting facilities on the site take account of punctuation, so Diligam te, Domine will appear in a different place from Diligam te Domine.

Having said that, I have not yet identified why 6 different composers have set these particular verses! But it still seems sensible to gather them all together on one text page.

Grant us Thy peace (Mendelssohn)

Thanks for inserting the useful link, Ross. I assumed there must have been a German original, (since the translation is not gripping poetry!) but the source book gave no indication of this. You're right that it's not top-tier Mendelssohn, but it's a fine-enough piece, and I know of many church choirs (including my own) that would find your English edition very useful. Thomas Tomkins

I've been looking at gaps in the works of Tomkins (a compatriot of our patron David of Wales) at Musica Deo sacra (Thomas Tomkins) and have red-linked Christ rising & Thou art my King, which I have almost ready for upload. Ross, as someone who has contributed a lot to the site over the years, you may have noticed that we've recently been making significant changes to the composer pages. The principal aim of this is to automate, as far as possible, the process of adding new works to the composer pages. Another change is that we are removing the file links from the composer pages. The reason for this is simple; we have found by experience that, if people upload new version of files, they are automatically added to the works page, but need to be manually altered on the composer page. Most people forget to do this, so we end up with mismatched files.

One side benefit is that, in the past, people sometimes forgot to add their editions to the composer page and the new template picks up all those missing editions, as well as works where the composer is indicated solely as arranger. (My record so far for any composer is 21 missing works, including, shamefully, one of my own editions!) All this is still very much work in progress, particularly for the more complex composer pages, but I would be interested for any feedback you may have, whether positive or negative. I do appreciate that the process of adding and updating works has been simplified; certainly it's already made my life a bit easier. It's a pity that some composer pages no longer list works that don't yet have editions, but this is a minor quibble. (I suppose anyone looking for exhaustive works lists can consult Grove, anyway. And upon looking around at other composer pages, it appears we can still add titles of unedited works, so it appears my point is moot!) Thanks, Ross. I think, on the issue of not-yet-loaded works, I don't think this has ever been done automatically. It's a fairly random process at the moment. I think there's a good reason for it if, say, not all the parts of an opus have been uploaded. Also, if anyone is prepared to add all the works of a specific composer (or, at least, all the choral or vocal works). A disadvantage of SortWorks is that it will only produce a list of uploaded works, so the remainder will be left in a manually sorted list underneath.Jamesgibb (talk) 08:42, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

Forgive my delay in tending to this! I think the middle boxes without a number suggest that the piece is for only one choir (rather than opposing choirs of mixed voices, trebles, instruments, and so on). I'll edit the page accordingly. Tomkins' individual parts enquiry

Dear Ross,

I love your music editions online; they are fantastic and so useful to have, so thank you so much for them.

I was wondering if you happened to have separate parts for three verse anthems: 'O that the Salvation were given unto Israel'; 'God, which as upon this day' and 'Leave, O my soul' by T. Tomkins? I will be doing this with voices and viols so wondered if I could have the parts in treble and bass clefs, as well as additional alto and tenor parts in alto clef? I am happy to pay you for your time.

A spotless rose (Howells) - error in tenor part, m.33

Hi Ross, A user sent me a message about 3 wrong notes in m.33 of the tenor part - notes 3,4,5 should be B,A,B (as with the corresponding notes in m.3).
