Pasting the lyrics from a score

As long as the lyrics are not copyrighted (usually would have to be written after 1927) the text is "Public Domain" and may be reproduced freely. If the lyrics are taken from a Public Domain score (such as most CPDL scores) it is (by definition) in the Public Domain, and free of any copyright restrictions over the lyric use. I'd just like to point out that most CPDL scores are not in the public domain, they are licensed under the CPDL license which is not the same as releasing the edition into the public domain. The reason for releasing an edition under the CPDL license rather than releasing it to the public domain is to restrict commercial use of it. (Copying and pasting the text or, indeed, a translation from an CPDL-licensed edition onto the appropriate wiki page is permitted under the license). I think it's important to make the distinction between the CPDL license and public domain which is why I've gone to these lengths to intervene on your comment, John! --Bobnotts talk 09:41, 21 February 2008 (PST)
