The second edition was published in 1767: the title page is again dated. Description of contents
While the title pages of both editions of the work ascribe its composition to 'an eminent master of the county of Leicester', the music may have been composed by Arnold himself: the Hymn Tune Index attributes the psalm tunes to him.
The first edition consists of 26 metrical psalm tunes (pages 1-70), 9 anthems (page 71-143) and settings of the Te Deum and Magnificat (pages 144-174). In the second edition, the Te Deum and Magnificat are replaced by two 'new psalm tunes' (pages 144-157): the first of these, 'Belgrave Tune', is a set-piece (a through-composed setting of a metrical text), while the second, 'Syston Tune', is a metrical psalm tune.
