Talk:Christopher Tye

The index format here is not good. Tye was at the very cutting edge of the Protestant reformation in England under Edward VI, and his aim was to supplant Latin settings with those in the vernacular (a musical parallel to the liturgy of Cranmer). In that context it is useful to distinguish his Latin and English settings. I don't believe that the category of Greek settings is appropriate (and this is true for other composer pages also). Whereas it is pedantically correct that the Kyrie is Greek in origin, the context of its composition and use is that of the Latin mass. "Larger works" is misleading. One item comprises a collection of miniatures, the other two parts of a psalm. If the principal that gobbets of a Psalm are split up and labelled major works, then revision will be required to almost every Renaissance and baroque composer's list of works. Indeed on the Tye page itself, the Deus misereatur (O God be merciful) would need to be split into its three constituent parts. So, in short, a psalm should not (with very few exceptions) be categorised as a major work. And here is no exception "Acts of the Apostles" is not a major work, but a collection of miniatures. These albums are usually not segregated but are disclosed by subdivision within the main body of the index: the current layout creates unnecessary duplication, since items are listed both individually and collectively, under both "Works in English" and (the redundant) "Larger works".Cjshawcj (talk) 13:06, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for elucidating the situation. Your second sentence should be part of composer's page. What page organisation would you prefer, then? Would you want to format it, or do you want me to try? You obviously know the composer's works better than I do. – Barry Johnston (talk) 14:19, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
I have reorganized the page along the lines suggested above. – Barry Johnston (talk) 19:18, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
The redundancy is addressed, but I think what was being requested (or at least what I would prefer to see) is for "Acts of the Apostles" to be listed in order, but not duplicated alphabetically in Sacred works in English Richard Mix (talk) 21:05, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
Is this what you're after? – Barry Johnston (talk) 19:35, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
Yes, quite nice! Richard Mix (talk) 21:05, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
