A tinge of gold on the leafy trees,
   A few faint clouds in the sky,
The chilly breath of the evening breeze
   Tell us ’tis summer’s sweet goodbye.

The evening shadows that earlier creep
   O’er the green and sheltered vale,
O’er woods where now the song birds sleep
   Are telling the same sad tale;

And the amber light in the evening sky
   Is the parting smile of a sweet goodbye.
The ripening fruits in their golden glow,
   The swallows circling high,

The gentle stream in its quickening glow
   Proclaim ’tis summer’s sweet goodbye.
The glorious sun, as the day steals on,
   Shines with a mellowed ray,

And the flowers are faded, their beauty gone,
   Have sunk low by swift decay.
But their scent still lingers; like zephyrs soft
   Is the breath of summer’s sweet goodbye.
