  • (Posted 2018-08-31)  CPDL #51099:
Editor: Simon Biazeck (submitted 2018-08-31).   Score information: A4, 8 pages, 131 kB   Copyright: CPDL
Edition notes: This edition - transposed down a fourth form the original pitch ('alla quarta bassa') - is, in part, an attempt to unlock a lost sound world for this period. The approach to editorial cadences takes its cue from Gioseffo Zarlino’s comments about phrase structure of music and text in chapter 32 of Part IV of his treatise, Le Istitutioni Harmoniche (1558):
“… one should not make a cadence, especially a principle one […] unless the sentence or the full sense of the words is completed.”
Zarlino is talking about text placement and certainly addressing composers, but his advice is useful for singers and modern-day editors.
