General Information

Title: Psaume 121
Composer: Wytze Oostenbrug
Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: SATB
Genre: SacredHymn

Language: French
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 2021
Description: Psalm 121 has been set to music by many composers (Schubert, Mendelssohn). Sometimes also in the official French version (Manneke), as published as by Louis Segond (LSG). Here I also chose the French version for this work. From the complete French text, which is listed below with Dutch translation, I have selected a few inspiring phrases.

The work evolves from anxious awaiting the rescue by the Eternal to a steady trust therein.

French.png French text

Je lève mes yeux vers les montagnes,
D'ou me viendra le secours?

Le secours me vient de l'Éternel,
Qui a fait les cieux et la terre.

L'Éternel te gardera de tout mal,
Il gardera ton âme;

L'Éternel gardera ton départ et ton arrivé,
Dès maintenant et à jamais.

Je lève mes yeux vers les montagnes,
Le secours me vient de l’Éternel.

Dutch.png Dutch text

Ik hef mijn ogen op naar de bergen,
vanwaar mijn hulp komen zal.

Mijn hulp is van de Heer,
Die hemel en aarde gemaakt heeft.

De Heer zal u bewaren van alle kwaad;
uw ziel zal Hij bewaren.

De Heer zal uw uitgang en uw ingang bewaren,
van nu aan tot in der eeuwigheid.

Ik hef mijn ogen op naar de bergen,
Mijn hulp is van de Heer.
