Notre vicaire un jour de fête,
Chantait un Agnus gringotté,
Tant qu'il pouvait à pleine tête,
Pensant d'Annette être écouté.
Annette de l'autre côté
Pleurait comme prisé a son chant.
Dont le vicaire en s'approchant
Lui dit: "Pourquoi pleurez vous, belle?"
"Ha, ha Messire Jehan", ce dit elle,
"Je pleure un âne qui m'est mort,
Qui avait la voix toute telle
Que vous, quand vous criez si fort".

So this feast-day our vicar
Sings a florid Agnus Dei,
Loud as he can, full head-voice,
Hoping to be heard by Annette.
Annette, on the other side of the combe,
Weeps, like the song has moved her.
The vicar, making his move closer,
says to her: "Why are you tearful, m'dear?"
"Ha, John Sir", says she,
"I'm crying for my ass (it died on me);
It had a bray EXACTLY like yours,
When you shout so loud".
