1. In a little, low cottage with vines' round the door,
In years of long ago,
With its sand polished floors and its wood-bottomed chairs
And tinware all in a row,
There a dear little mother watched over her brood,
With a love divine and strong,
And when days work was over she'd tuck them in bed,
While she'd sing a song:

Refrain:
Hush my child, lie still and slumber,
Holy angels guard thy bed.
If I could hear that song tonight,
If I could feel that touch so light,
I'd give my gold, all shining bright,
If I could hear that song tonight.

2. I have lived in rich mansions and trod marble halls,
I've known the love of gold,
But I'd give all my treasures and money to buy
The joys of one night of old,
With a dear hand to tenderly tuck me in bed,
And the love it used to bring,
There to drift off to dreamland, contented and safe,
