Number of voices: 5vv Voicings: SATTB or SATBB
Genre: Secular, Partsong
Language: German

First published: 1601 in Lustgarten neuer teutscher Gesäng, no. 24
2nd published: 1906 in Volksliederbuch für Männerchor, no. 415
3rd published: 1915 in Volksliederbuch für gemischten Chor, no. 342
Description: The melody became the well-known Passion Chorale, variously sung with the 76. 76. D hymns Herzlich tut mich Verlangen, Befiehl du deine Wege, and O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden (O sacred head). Elmar Seidel in 2001 (citation and link in external links below) convincingly argues that Bach was probably unaware of this secular source for the Passion chorale. See Herzlich thut mich verlangen (Johann Sebastian Bach) for a list of different harmonizations made from this tune.
