Description: The melody became the well-known Passion Chorale, variously sung with the 76. 76. D hymns Herzlich tut mich Verlangen, Befiehl du deine Wege, and O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden (O sacred head). Elmar Seidel in 2001 (citation and link in external links below) convincingly argues that Bach was probably unaware of this secular source for the Passion chorale. German text

1  Mein G'müth ist mir verwirret, das macht ein Jungfrau zart; bin ganz und gar verirret, mein Herz das kränckt sich hart. Hab Tag und Nacht kein Ruh, führ allzeit grosse Klag, tu stets seufzen und weinen, in trauren Schier verzag.

2  Ach, daß sie mich tät fragen, was doch die Ursach sei warum ich fuhr solch Klagen, ich wollt ihr’s sagen frei, daß sie allein die ist, die mich so seht verwundt, könnt ich ihr Herz erweichen, wird ich bald wider g’sund.

3  Reichlich ist sie gezieret, mit schön Tugend ohn Ziel, höflich wie sie gebüret, ihr’s Gleichen ist nicht viel, für andern Jungfrau’n zart, führt sie allzeit den Preis, wann ich’s anschau, vermeine, ich sei im Paradeis.

4  Ich kann nicht gang erzehlen, Ihr Schon und Tugend viel, Fur all'n wot ich's erwehlen, wer es nur auch ihr will, Dass sie ihr Herz und Lieb geg'n mir wendet allzeit, So wurd mein Schmerz und Klagen verkehrt in grosse Freud.

5  Aber ich muß aufgeben, und allzeit traurig sein, sollts mir gleich kosten Leben, das ist mein grösste Pein, dann ich bin ihr zu schlecht, darum sie mein nicht acht, Gott wollts für Leid bewahren, durch sein göttliche Macht.
