It has here been given an octave lower (in accordance with modern convention), with the exception of bars 1, 2, 5 and 6, which are notated at the same octave as in the source, as potentially more comfortable for some altos. The first verse only of the text is underlaid in the source: three subsequent verses have been added editorially.

Description: Hymn Tune Index tune number 16850. This tune has remained in use as a Christmas carol in the Dorset village of Durweston, where it is associated with the text Hark the herald angels sing.
