1 In principio erat verbum,
et verbum erat apud Deum,
et Deus erat verbum.
2 Hoc erat in principio apud Deum.
3 Omnia per ipsum facta sunt:
et sine ipso factum est nihil.
4 Quod factum est in ipso vita erat,
et vita erat lux hominum:
5 et lux in tenebris lucet,
et tenebræ eam non comprehenderunt.
6 Fuit homo missus a Deo, cui nomen Johannes.
7 Hic venit in testimonium,
ut testimonium perhiberet de lumine,
ut omnes crederent per illum.
8 Non erat ille lux,
sed ut testimonium perhiberet de lumine.
9 Erat lux vera, quæ illuminat omnem hominem
venientem in hunc mundum.
dedit eis potestatem filios Dei fieri,
his qui credunt in nomine ejus,
Vulgate

English.png English translation

1 In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through him,
and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life,
and the life was the light of men.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 He came as a witness,
to bear witness about the light,
that all might believe through him.
8 He was not the light,
but came to bear witness about the light.
9 The true light, which gives light to everyone,
was coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him,
yet the world did not know him.
11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name,
he gave the right
to become children of God,
13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh
nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
English Standard Version [1]

English.png English translation

1 In the beginning was the word,
and the word was in the presence of God,
and God was the word.
2 It was with God in the beginning.
3 all things through it were made,
and without it nothing was made.
4 What was made in it was life,
and life was the light of men.
5 And the light shines in the darkness,
yet the darkness did not understand it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.
7 He came as a witness,
to give witness concerning that light,
so that all men might believe through him.
8 He, himself, was not the light,
but he came as a witness to the light.
9 This was the true light
that gives light to every man who comes into the world.
10 It was in the world, and though it the world was made,
yet the world did not recognise him.
11 It came amongst its own, but its own did not receive it.
12 Yet to all who received him,
he gave the right to become children of God,
to those who believe in his name,
13 who were not born of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. And we saw his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

5 A világosság a sötétségben világít,
aki a világba jön,
