Improved Psalmody
General information
Improved Psalmody was a collection of metrical psalm tunes, compiled by William Dechair Tattersall. The work was published by subscription, and is dated June 4th, 1794 at the end of the list of subscribers. The main part of the work consists of settings of the metrical versions of the psalms written in continuous streams of couplets by James Merrick, which were arranged into stanzas by Tattersall. The tunes to which these texts are set were mostly newly-composed for the work, in three parts for two trebles and bass: Tattersall commissioned the leading composers of the time to contribute to it. Only 'Vol. 1' of the work, was issued: the main part of this consists of 218 settings of texts from Psalms 1-75, while the expected Vol. 2, to include Psalms 76-150, never appeared.

Editions
The 218 settings in Vol. 1 appear to have been issued in three numbers. There are examples (for example GB-Lbl: C.481., cited in the Hymn Tune Index as 'TattWIP1 a') with only Psalms 1-25 of this main sequence. In copies of the full surviving Vol. 1 (for example GB-Lbl: C.16.jj., cited in the Hymn Tune Index as 'TattWIP1 b'), page 94 (at the start of settings of Psalm 26) is headed 'Vol. 1. Part. 2.', while p216 (at the start of settings of Psalm 51) is headed 'Vol. 1. Part. 3.' In addition to these versions of the work with the music set in score, the full Vol. 1 was reissued as a set of three partbooks in 1795.
Appendices
In addition to the main sequence of 218 settings, each of the various editions of the work has an Appendix: the contents of the Appendix vary between editions. The issue of Part 1 (Psalms 1-25) has a 7-page 'Appendix containing Selections from the old Version', paginated continuously with the main sequence of the work, with seven settings of 'Old Version' texts to long-established psalm tunes. The full version of Vol. 1 in score has a 20-page appendix, paginated separately from the main sequence of the work, and containing 19 older tunes, each of which is set both to a text from the 'Old Version' and to a text by Merrick. The issue of the full version of Vol. 1 in partbooks in 1795 is paginated continuously with the main sequence of the work, but is headed 'APPENDIX. The Music selected from Composers the most eminent in their Time, and adapted to the Words of the foregoing Version', and has the 19 tunes from the Appendix of the full score-book version, but with only the Merrick texts.
