Edition notes: In the original printing of this motet, the text of verses 2-9 were printed separately at the bottom of the page, raising many ambiguities about text underlayment. In this edition these questions have been arbitrarily resolved by the editor. Text underlay of v. 1 is that of the composer.

Original text and translations

German.png German text

1.  Gott sei Dank durch alle Welt,
der sein Wort beständig hält
und der Sünder Trost und Rat
zu uns herge sendet hat

3.  Was der alten Väter Schar,
höchster Wunsch und Sehnen war,
und was sie geprophezeit
ist erfüllt in Herrlichkeit.

3b.  Zions hilf' und Abra'ms Lohn,
Jakobs Heil, der Jungfrau Sohn
der wohl zweigestammte Held
hat sich treulich eingestellt.

4.  Sei willkommen, o mein Heil,
Hosian, Hosianna, o mein, Teil!
Richte du auch eine Bahn
dir in meinem Herzen an.

5.  Zeuch, du EhrenKönig, ein,
es gehöret dir allein;
mach es, wie du gerne tust,
rein von allem Sündenwust;

6.  und wie deine Ankunft war,
voller Sanftmut ohn' Gefahr,
also sei auch jederzeit
deine Sanftmut mir bereit.

7.  Tröste, tröste, meinen Sinn,
weil ich schwach und blöde bin,
und des Satans schlaue List
sich zu hoch für mich vermißt.

8.  Tritt der Schlangen Kopf entzwei,
daß ich aller Ängsten frei
dir im Glauben um und an
selig bleiben zugetan;

9.  daß, wenn du, o Lebensfürst,
prächtig wiederkommen wirst,
ich dir mög' entgegen gehn
und vor dir gerecht bestehn.

English.png English translation

1. Thanks to God throughout the world,
who His Word unchanging holds,
who to sinners has been sent
comfort, counsel to extend!

2. What the saints of long ago
most desired and longed to hold,
what their prophesies instilled
now is gloriously fulfilled.

3. Zion's help to Abra'm giv’n,
Jacob saved, the virgin's Son,
who, by double lineage blessed,
truly does Himself enlist.

4. Welcome, now, O Savior, Lord,
hosianna, praise to God.
May the way be straight for You,
come into my heart anew.

5. Enter in, majestic King.
All my heart is yours, I sing.
Mold me, fashion as You will,
pure and free from sin and guilt.

6. As You came, at advent here,
mild and meek, but without fear,
may Your meekness ever be
offered as Your gift to me.

7. Comfort, comfort my poor mind,
I am foolish, I am blind,
and by Satan’s cunning craft
I may be deceived at last.

8. Tread upon the serpent's head
So that I be free from dread,
that with faith around, above,
I may live within Your love;

9. That, when You, O Prince of Life,
come again in splendor bright,
I may meet You face to face,
take in righteousness my place.
