E contrari mi sien gl'huomini e Dio.

English.png English text

Oh, if the haughty disdain
That ignited in you such a cruel desire
Could be entirely taken from you,
Listen, for God's sake, to what is true.
In me, there has never been and never will be a thought
Of offending the beauty
That in you, a thousand times, heaven has ordained
To adorn our present age.
And if there was anything else, neither in warmth nor in cold,
May it see the end of my every desire,
And may men and God be against me.
