The feast of Our Lady of the Snows or S. Mariae ad nives commemorates the 5th century dedication of the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, whose foundations were outlined by a miraculous snowfall. It falls on August 5 in the Tridentine calendar and has Propers all from the Common of the BVM. It is also the birthday of Guillaume Dufay, who composed another set of plainchants.
