voll Lieb‘ und Sehnsucht! aber ich stocke schon;
Ach, mein unselig Gleichnis regt mir
      plötzlich den Durst und mein Gaumen lechzet.

Verzeih! Im Jägerschlößchen ist frisches Bier
Und Kegelabend heut‘: ich versprach es
Halb und halb dem Oberamtsgerichtsverweser,
      Auch dem Notar und dem Oberförster. Verzeih!

English.png English translation

Just like a musical scale your plaintive song rises
and swells, as when a bottle is filled.
It climbs and climbs up in the neck
      and then the glorious liquid spills.

Oh philomel, to you I dedicate my song
of love and longing! But I cannot go on;
for my pitiful song cannot compete
      with my thirst and my craving palate.

Forgive! The hunter’s lodge is serving fresh beer,
tonight is bowling night.
I half-promised to my friends the county court administrator,
      the notary, and the chief of forestry. Forgive!
