A Second Sett of Hymns and Psalm Tunes was the second volume of James Leach's music to be published. The Hymn Tune Index dates the publication of the first edition of the book to the period 1789-1798, on the basis that Leach's first book A New Sett of Hymns and Psalm Tunes was published in 1789 (the first edition of that book having a preface dated 29 June 1789), and that a second edition of A Second Sett contains a notice dated 1798.
A Second Sett contains 48 strophic hymn or metrical psalm tunes, with three set-pieces (through-composed settings of metrical texts) at the end of the book.
For most of the settings, the vocal bass part is figured, although there are some sections of the set-pieces with independent instrumental bass parts. The book does not include independent parts for treble-range instruments, although some pieces in A Collection of Hymn Tunes and Anthems [1798], the third, posthumously-published book of Leach's music, do.
Publication date and place:1795 by Preston and Massey in Manchester.
